Mykel Filip Miller was born in Phoenix and lived in Ahwatukee, Arizona with his mother Maria, stepfather David and 2 young step-brothers, CJ and Jacob. He enlisted in the Arizona Army National Guard on June 17, 2005 and graduated from Desert Vista High School in 2006. Immediately after graduation, he attended Basic and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, GA becoming qualified as an 11B, Infantryman.

Assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 158th Infantry, PFC Miller was called up for federal service in support of the Global War on Terrorism on 3 January 2007 and deployed to Afghanistan in March 2007. He was a member of 3rd Squad, 3rd Platoon, Bravo Company and Provincial Reconstruction Team Qalat.

PFC Mykel F. Miller was killed in action on 6 September 2007, when an Improvised Explosive Device struck his vehicle during a Ground Assault Convoy mission in Zabul Province, Afghanistan.

PFC Miller’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and Expert M16 Qualification Badge.
