Brigadier General Lonnie J. Branum Jr. enlisted in the Arizona Army National Guard in 1982 and was later commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1994 through Officer Candidate School. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from Arizona State University, a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. His military education includes the Field Artillery Officer Basic and Advance Courses; the Military Police Transition Course; the Combined Arms and Services Staff School; Intermediate Level Education and the U.S. Army War College. His commissioned officer duty assignments include: Fire Direction Officer and Executive Officer, Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion 180th Field Artillery; Battalion Fire Direction Officer, 1st Battalion 180th Field Artillery; Commander, Bravo Battery, 2nd Battalion 180th Field Artillery; Battalion Fire Direction Officer, 2nd Battalion 180th Field Artillery; Operations Officer, 153rd Field Artillery Brigade; Operations Officer, 2nd Battalion 180th Field Artillery, Mosul, Iraq; Battalion S3 and Executive Officer, 2nd Battalion 180th Field Artillery; Contract Team Leader 1971st Acquisition Team; Deputy Director of Program Operations, CENTCOM Joint Theater Support Contracting Command, Kabul, Afghanistan; Commander, 850th Military Police Battalion; Deputy Commanding Officer, 158th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade; Commander, 158th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade; and Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations - G3, Arizona Army National Guard. Most recently he served as the Deputy Adjutant General, Arizona National Guard.

A traditional guardsman and Arizona Native, Brigadier General Branum is an Engineer with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center working on the Apache Longbow Helicopter Program in Mesa, Arizona. Brigadier General Branum is married to Stacy Branum and they have three adult sons Tyler, Shane and Colby.
