Federal Assistance for Disasters

Federal Assistance for Disasters

If the President grants a Major Disaster Declaration to benefit those individuals/households who were impacted by a disaster event, the first step in acquiring assistance for the following Federal programs is for those survivors to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Four programs may be available upon a major disaster declaration.

FEMA's Individuals and Households Program (IHP)

Provides money and direct services to those affected by a major disaster through two areas – Housing Assistance and Other Needs Assistance (ONA). (Requirements must be met to qualify for help from these programs.)

FEMA's Crisis Counseling Assistance and Training Program

Provides supplemental funding to states for short-term crisis counseling services.

FEMA’s Disater Unemployment Assistance

Assistance for those who have become unemployed as a result of the disaster.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)

Provides low-interest loans for damage to property owned by homeowners, renters, businesses and private non-profit organizations that are not fully covered by insurance.
